Monthly Calendar

 The monthly Members's meeting is held on the 4th Wednesday of the month*

The meetings are held at St. Augustine's Church Hall, Parkanaur Avenue, SS1 3HX in Thorpe Bay. The Hall is at the junction of Parkanaur Avenue and Johnstone Road in the centre of Thorpe Bay. Parking is available outside the venue and in the neighbouring streets.

Please don't arrive before 2.15pm - to give us a chance to set up the hall and we have to make sure the hall is laid out and is safe before we allow guests to enter. The meeting commences at 2.30pm - we will make sure that everyone is seated before we commence the meeting.  

The Monthly Meeting provides an opportunity for  existing  Shoebury u3a members to get together and to listen to  speakers covering a range of interesting topics or be entertained by our own Drama Group.

We also have a members' desk for enquiries and for prospective members to join our u3a. Please come equipped with your cheque book !

Laura from Essex County Fire & Rescue Service will give us a Road Safety talk that focuses on the “fatal 4” (inappropriate speed, distractions, seatbelts and drink/drug driving) and how to negate these as well as how the new  Highway Code changed recently.  We also talk about how driving changes as we get older and promote the “Driving with Confidence” scheme that provides a free session with mature drivers to help keep them on the road for longer.

David Hadjicostas MBE is a local man, previously a fire fighter and he served in the army for 7 years.  He is director and chair of Shoebury Coastal CIC and is involved with the Heritage project at The Cart and Wagon shed on Shoebury Common and will be talking about that.

Nick Dobson is a former professional Librarian who will take the Time Tube Train back to London of the 1950's and discover a decade during which wartime austerity gave way to growing optimism. This fully illustrated talk will reveal a City quite different from today's London, but a City more vibrant and colourful in the '50's than we might think.

Pop on your big shoulder pads, neon aerobic wear, metallic leggings and scrunchies and come along to see a colourful show and sing your heart out.

Cliff gives a presentation about the history of the CWGC and its work today. The presentation starts with how the Commission began, its work during the First and Second World Wars and concludes with its work today in maintaining and preserving our historic estate around the World. The presentation will also focus on the war graves in your local area and tell the stories of some of those we commemorate.

Paul is one of Britain's foremost Elvis impersonators.

Paul trained at Wimbledon School of Art and is currently Artist In Residence at Nottingham QMC and City hospitals. His unique mixture of art and music has proved a huge success in supporting the wellbeing and mental health of patients as part of the Hospital Trust’s award winning Arts programme. In his talk, “The Life and Work of Elvis Presley” Paul will be performing songs on the guitar and painting large scale images as he illustrates the meteoric career of the King of Rock and Roll. As a respected tribute artist Paul has performed on GMTV and The One Show and he has discussed Elvis with Simon Mayo on BBC Radio 5. The rock journalist and TV presenter David Hepworth described Paul as “an Elvis Educator “.
